‘Makeup Artist’, directed by Jafar Najafi, won one of the two Awards of Excellence which were granted for films taking part in the New Asian Currents category, which "introduce up-and-coming Asian documentary filmmakers", according to the YIDFF's website.
“Mina, determined to realize her dreams, not only refuses to succumb to her husband and mother-in-law’s fierce opposition, but also paves her own path and pushes forward along it. Gradually, it looks as if the people and world around her are starting to change…,” a synopsis for the film reads.
The 2021 edition of Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival took place on October 7-14.
“Until recently, the week-long YIDFF was one of the few film festivals in Asia devoted exclusively to the documentary form. Its scope, however, reaches beyond simply screening recent, ground-breaking work in the International Competition. New Asian Currents, the competition program introducing emerging filmmakers from across Asia, has over the years become one of the Festival’s vibrant centers of attention as a meeting place of raw youthful energy,” the event’s website reads.
