Iran’s ‘Makeup Artist’ awarded at IDFA

The Int’l Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in the Netherlands honors Iranian ‘Makeup Artist’.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in the Netherlands has honored Iranian movie ‘Makeup Artist’.

Directed by Jafar Najafi, the Iranian documentary won the FIPRESCI Award, the IDFA organizers announced on Friday.

‘Makeup Artist’ is about Mina, a makeup artist who is determined to realize her dreams. She, not only refuses to succumb to her husband and mother-in-law’s fierce opposition, but also paves her own path and pushes forward along it. Gradually, it looks as if the people and world around her are starting to change.

The doc has also recently won an Award of Excellence at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival in Japan.

Water, Wind, Dust, Bread’ by Mehdi Zamanpour-Kiasari from Iran also received a special mention at this edition of the IDFA.

The IDFA Award for Best Film in the international section went to Sergei Loznitsa’s ‘Mr. Landsbergis’, a co-production from Lithuania and the Netherlands.

Diem Ha Le from Vietnam received the IDFA Award for Best Directing in the International Competition for ‘Children of the Mist’.

The IDFA Award for Best Short Documentary was presented to Pavel Mozhar’s ‘Handbook’, a co-production from Germany and Belarus.

The other titles that represented Iran at this edition of the IDFA were ‘I Am Trying to Remember’ by Pegah Ahangarani and ‘Tonight’s Homework’ by Ashkan Nejati.

The 34th edition of the IDFA is being held in person and includes film screenings, discussions, and presents an interactive experience.

The 2021 edition of the festival has been slated for November 17-28.
