The tenth day of the Islamic lunar month of Muharram marking the heart-rending martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) falls on October 1 this year.
Martyred in the year 61 AH (680 AD) on the tenth day of Muharram, AKA Ashura, Imam Hussein (AS) remains close to the hearts of Muslims of all time.
The third Shia Imam was martyred in Karbala while struggling to revive teachings of his grandfather, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Imam Hussein was martyred at the behest of Yazid during his struggle to reclaim his divine right to lead the Muslim world from Yazid, the tyrant who had stolen the Imam’s divine right.
Ashura, an Islamic sad holiday, is commemorated in many countries, including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
Among the rituals held on this religious day are handing out food to the poor and mourning ceremonies honoring the Imam’s great sacrifice for mankind.
Media reports say Iran intends to establish Ashura International Foundation.
The foundation plans to elucidate and spread teachings of Imam Hussein (AS) and his uprising.
