As global cinema industry figures are published annually, some of the figures might raise eyebrows, while others would simply astonish the readers. ifilm will, in this series of articles, highlight some of those figures based on globally published statistics for 2017.

12- There was an eight percent increase in the number of films released in north America compared to the previous year. Out of the 777 movies that were unveiled, 12% came from the independents.
13- In 2017, people spent five percent more on home entertainment released on disc or digital platforms to hit a record of $20.5 billion. That made 65% of all consumer spending on theatrical or home entertainment.
14- Digital home entertainment ranked first with 43%, while online video material viewed by people kept rising and hit a record of 167.5 billion views and deals; the figure showed a 41% growth compared to the previous year.
15- Online video subscription also increased to 157 million people which saw a 21% rise compared to 2016. It is actually more than double in comparison with any other categories such as cable, satellite, or IPTV.
