Signes de Nuit awards Iran doc ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’

The 16th Signes de Nuit Int’l Film Festival in France awards Iranian doc ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’.

The 16th edition of the Signes de Nuit International Film Festival in France has awarded Iranian documentary ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’.

Directed by Reza Farahmand, the doc won the main award at the French event.

The Signes de Nuit jury releases statement on ‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’ where it hails Farahmand’s bravery for taking the camera close to the subjects, giving the audience a glimpse into the severe tensions on the front line, and people’s suffering.

The juries also commended the film for having succeeded in bringing to light the ambiguity and uncertainty in the words of Daesh supporters.

The film is about Noor Al Helli, a female journalist who covers stories about Syrian and Iraqi women and children in the war against the Daesh terrorists.

In December 2017, the film won the best feature-length documentary award at the 11th edition of the Cinema Verite, Iran’s major international festival of documentary cinema organized by Iran’s Documentary and Experimental Film Center.

It also brought Farahmand the award for best director in the national competition section.

‘Women with Gunpowder Earrings’ took part at the 71st Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland.

Established in 2003, the Signes de Nuit International Film Festival is an annual event which accepts documentary, fiction, experimental films and short films.

The 16th edition of the French film event was held on October 4-14, 2018.
