London-based photojournalist Emily Garthwaite has co-directed her first documentary ‘The 40th Day in Iraq on Arba’een’ themed on the Arba’een Pilgrimage.

Photojournalist Emily Garthwaite has traveled through southern Iraq with an Iranian documentary film crew co-directing and photographing the Arba’een Pilgrimage, the world's largest annual pilgrimage.

The documentary will be screened at Chehelcheragh International Festival in Tehran, Iran. It will also debut in Italy.

As the world’s most populous gathering, millions of people annually take part in Arba’een march ritual in Karbala to hold Arbaeen mourning ceremonies, the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions on Ashura.

Emily Garthwaite is a 25-year-old London based photojournalist focusing on humanitarian and environmental issues. She has a Masters in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of Westminster.

She has worked across India, South East Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Emily has also had exhibitions in USA, UK, Italy, Iran, Greece, France and Canada.

In 2018, Emily's image of a sun bear was awarded as a finalist for Wildlife Photographer of The Year 2018 in the photojournalism category.
