ifilm weekend pick 'Cyanide' is a romantic movie set in a political backdrop, rave review says.
The period flick by Behrouz Shoeibi tries to feature an agent with the Shah's dreaded secret police, the SAVAK, in so-called positive and likable fashion despite the depiction of such characters in many Iranian movies otherwise as “ruthless monsters.”
Played by Mehdi Hashemi, the character named Behmanesh poses a serious question to those killing Muslims, asking, “Why do Marxist supporters keep killing Muslims like a war machine, but Muslims don’t even shoot them?”
The character who shattered the stereotype of a SAVAK agent also asked another key question about why one of the personae who was in a romantic relationship did not say to his beloved that all this was a set-up!
The concluding scene of the flick reveals the answer to these questions especially when the female lead’s self-deception comes tumbling down, including an unaccomplished love.
The director strives to identify with two characters; namely, a SAVAK agent and a member of Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) who was a Marxist ideologue.
ifilm’s new feature film ‘Cyanide’ has been scheduled to go on air on March 30, 2019.
