Iran films get new rating system

Cinema Organization of Iran introduces new movie ratings system.

The Iranian Organization of Cinema and Audiovisual Affairs has introduced new regulations to be applied for movie ratings.

The age-based movie ratings system indicates that “Films must not unsettle young children, teenagers, or young adults based on educational, ethical and social beliefs. Observing these regulations is a must for the film industry.”

According to the new regulations, the rating system is simply a guideline for the audience to identify these with corresponding educational and psychological standards.

Based on the new regulations, the ratings are as follows:

Rated PG: Some material may not be suitable for children under the age of nine, including some scenes and language. Parental guidance suggested.

Rated PG-12: Some material may be inappropriate for children under 12, including violent scenes, scary scenes, improper language, and smoking. Parents strongly cautioned.

Rated R: Restricted for under 15; requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. Includes scary scenes, smoking, drug use, foul language, unconventional relations.

X Rated: Only people aged 18 and above will be admitted. Contains excessive violence, use of drugs, scenes indicating marital relations or inappropriate moves.

As it is suggested, during the screening of the movie, the ratings must be subtitled at least five times before the unsuitable scenes.

Production companies, distributors and producers are informed of the new regulations; and the film distributors, movies theaters, movie streaming sites and movie ticket booking sites are required to subsequently inform people of the ratings of movies onscreen.
