Female filmmakers in Iran post-Revolution cinema: ifilm exclusive

The role of female filmmakers in Iran post-Revolution cinema has been exclusively reviewed by ifilm.

In an ifilm exclusive report, the role of female filmmakers in Iran post-Revolution cinema has been reviewed.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, women have been key contributors to contemporary Iranian cinema whose films have impressed audiences and film festivals worldwide.

Contrary to the Western belief that the veil completely imprisons women, Iranian women’s role in the performing arts has been remarkably diverse. Mainly, the post-revolutionary film industry has restored an Iranian image of strong female characters that had been lost in most pre-revolutionary films. Female roles have changed drastically from the pre-revolutionary era, both behind and in front of the camera.

Rakhshan Banietemad, Pouran Derakhshandeh, Marzieh Boroumand, Tahmineh Milani, Ida Panahandeh and Narges Abyar are only a few names among the many female directors who succeeded to find their footing in cinema.
