'Godzilla Resurgence' wins big at Japan Academy Prize Awards

CGI-heavy reboot of the iconic Godzilla series, ‘Godzilla Resurgence’, wins seven Japan Academy prizes at a ceremony in Tokyo.

‘Godzilla Resurgence’ (Shin Godzilla) was the big winner, with seven victories including Best Picture, at the 40th edition of the Japan Academy Prize awards on Friday.

The Godzilla reboot beat out Makoto Shinkai's mega-hit anime ‘Your Name’, which took three awards.

Clint Eastwood’s ‘Sully’ starring Tom Hanks took home the Best Foreign Film award, beating out ‘The Revenant’, ‘Zootopia’, ‘The Martian’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

‘Godzilla Resurgence’ won Best Picture, while Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi jointly took the Best Director award for their work together on the reboot of the iconic monster franchise.

The awards show rewarded ‘In This Corner of the World’ with the Best Animated award as well.

Godzilla is a fictional giant monster and eponymous character, first appearing in Ishirō Honda’s 1954 film.
