Parvin Etesami filmfest honors women in cinema

Iran’s National Parvin Etesami Film Festival honors women working in cinema.

The Parvin Etesami film festival, which has held its 9th edition in February, is named after one of the great contemporary female poets of Iran, Parvin Etesami (1907-1941).

Parvin was a 20th century Persian poet, who had her first edition of Diwan (book of poetry) published in 1935.

The second edition of her Diwan appeared shortly after her death in 1941. It is in four Persian poetic styles, including Mathnawi, Qasida, Ghazal, and Qeta.

Parvin, aka Rakhshandeh, was born in 1907, in Tabriz. She is said to have started composing poetry when she was eight years old. Safar-e ashk (Journey of a tear) counts among the finest lyrics ever written in Persian.

Her poems focus on social awareness and the human aspect of life with simple yet insightful allegorical elements.
