Windmills in Iran dating from centuries ago are to be considered for registration on the UNESCO list.

Iran gigantic windmills dating back to centuries ago are poised to be included on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Kambiz Moshtaq Gohari, head of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Department in Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, said a nomination dossier for considering inscription of windmills on the UNESCO list is being prepared with Iran and Afghanistan being likely to submit the file together.

He, however, noted that Iran intends to emphasize more on the importance of windmills in Sistan and Baluchestan as such great structures were invented by the province residents.

The southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan is home to a number of windmills dating backing to the 16th century.

The UNESCO World Heritage List is a prestigious group of cultural and natural sites of outstanding value to the heritage of humanity.

Iran has several properties inscribed on the list including qanat water systems in Iran as well as the Lut Desert.
