Iranian doc ‘Finding Farideh’ is picked for Documentary category of the 92nd annual Academy Awards’.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has released a list of 159 documentary features that have been submitted for the 2020 Academy Awards (Oscars).

Co-directed by Azadeh Mousavi and Kourosh Ataee, Iran’s ‘Finding Farideh’ is one of the submitted titles for the Best Documentary category.

The doc has formerly been selected to vie at the International Feature Film category (previously known as Best Foreign Language Film) at the 2020 Oscars.

The story of 'Finding Farideh' begins with a newspaper report which reads a young woman who was adopted by a Dutch family is looking for her biological parents.

Farideh has lost her family almost 40 years ago in Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad province of Iran. At that time, she was sent to a Nursery where she was adopted by a Dutch family. The family moved to the Netherlands and Farideh grew up there. Now, she is in search of her biological parents.

As the Academy notes about the announced titles “several of the films have not had their required Los Angeles and New York qualifying releases yet. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules in order to advance in the voting process”.

A shortlist of 15 films will be announced on December 16.

Nominations for the 92nd annual Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, January 13, 2020.

The awards of the Academy will be presented to the winners on February 9, 2020.
