‘Sunless Shadows’ to compete at Jean Rouch Filmfest

The Jean Rouch Filmfest has selected Iranian documentary ‘Sunless Shadows’ for the competition section.

‘Sunless Shadows’ is slated to compete with 25 other films at the Jean Rouch International Film Festival.

The film directed by Mehrdad Oskouee has been qualified for the main competition section of the 39th edition of the festival.

The documentary narrates the story of five young women who are jailed in a small juvenile detention center for murder.

Through breathtaking monologues, the women clarify the circumstances of the murders and even their motives.

The 74-minute documentary has gone on screen at several global events, including the 19th DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival in Finland, the 17th Big Sky doc filmfest and the Museum of Modern Art in the US, the 17th True/False Film Fest in the US, the 18th Geneva International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Switzerland, and the 16th ZagrebDox in Croatia.

Established on March 1982 by anthropologist and filmmaker Jean Rouch, the event was previously known as Bilan du Film Ethnographique.

The festival is aimed at showcasing the most innovative and relevant trends in ethnographic film-making, visual anthropology, and to promote dialogue between cultures.

The festival selects films and documentaries on human societies and cultures with themes such as social and cultural diversity, continuity and change, cultural transmission, relationship to the environment.

The 39th edition of the event is slated for November 13 -21, 2020.
