Iran 'Retouch' director grabs media attention for Trump ban slam

Iranian director Kaveh Mazaheri has won media attention for slamming the Trump visa ban in his accaptance speech at Tribeca Film Festival.

Mazaheri’s short film ‘Retouch’ recently brought home the Best Narrative Short award from the 16th Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, though the director was notably absent from the event to receive the award.

US President Donald Trump’s travel ban prevented the Iranian director and the film’s crew from attending the annual New York festival. The subject matter was highlighted by the Western media, reporting the awards ceremony of Tribeca.

“The reason that I am not there is because of Mr. Trump’s fascinating decisions and as the least consequence, my crew and I couldn’t get U.S. visas,” Mazaheri said via a video message to festival participants.

He continued, "I would like to present it (my prize) honorably to all immigrants around the world who are struggling for a better life.”

He also thanked the jury for selecting his movie as the winner and said, “This is a pity that I am not among you tonight and I cannot talk to you in person.”

‘Retouch’ is about an Iranian woman whose husband is dying at home. She chooses to do nothing but watch him perish.

The film has participated in many international festivals, going on to win the Crystal Simorgh for Best Short Film at the Fajr Film Festival as well as the best short title from Iran Cinema Celebration.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order this year refusing citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries entry to the US for a period of 90 days.

Many people around the world have protested against Trump’s visa restrictions for Syrian refugees as well as nationals of other countries, including Iran.
