Hong Kong filmfest to review Abbas Kiarostami’s short titles

The 44th Hong Kong Int’l Film Festival is to review Abbas Kiarostami’s short titles.

The 44th edition of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) has been scheduled to review three short titles by the late great Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami.

‘In First Case, Second Case’ (1979), ‘Tribute to the Teachers’ (1977) and ‘Two Solutions for One Problem’ (1975) are Kiarostami’s short films to be showcased at the restored classics section of the event.

‘In First Case, Second Case’ is about the filmmaker posing a double-edged question: Is it better to betray your classmates or show solidarity against the punishment of an angry teacher?

‘Tribute to the Teachers’ is a short documentary featuring interviews with teachers and officials on the profession of teaching.

‘Two Solutions for One Problem’ is about two young boys who go to the same school. When one of them returns his friend’s notebook, its cover is inadvertently torn. The other is torn between a revenge or a solution to remain good friends.

Kiarostami has won many awards, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for ‘Taste of Cherry’.

He was mostly known as a screenwriter, film editor, art director and producer as well as a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer.

The veteran Iranian filmmaker passed away on July 4, 2016, following a heart attack at the age of 76. He was honored at more than 300 film events around the world.

The HKIFF aims to discover new areas of filmmaking in Asia and China.

Some competitive sections of the festival such as Firebird Awards and FIPRESCI Prize will be held online with the winners to be announced on August 20.
