In an interview with “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” hosted by David Letterman, Chappelle said he converted to Islam when he was 17 years old.
The 47-year-old actor added that he was a curious person and used to ask the Muslim employees at a Pizza shop near his house in Washington that he frequently went to about their religion.
“I liked the perspective of it [Islam] and I think these things informed my decision: that I wanted to have a meaningful life, a spiritual life,” said Chappelle.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Chappelle expressed his resentment over the way Islam is presented in the public space in the United States.
“It's been presented in the public space in such a narrow and dismissive view,” he said, adding, “It’s a beautiful religion. A beautiful religion.”
Chappelle, who appeared in the movie “A Star is Born”, is also a stand-up comedian and producer.
