Iranian actress Niki Karimi has joined the cast of a film about Iraq’s imposed war on Iran.

The 49-year-old actress will be one of the protagonists in the film ‘Girls’ Squad’ (Dasteh dokhtaran)

Monir Qeidi’s film is about the southwestern city of Khorramshahr, which fell into the hands of foreign-backed forces of Iraq’s former dictator Saddam Hussein during the 1980-88 war, also known as the eight years of Sacred Defense.

Later, the Iranians launched a large-scale operation to liberate the city.

Karimi made her movie debut in 'Temptation' in 1989, but her role in the movies 'The Bride' (1990) and 'Sara' (1991) earned her national fame.

She bagged many awards at various Iranian and international festivals.

Karimi is also a director. She made her first feature film 'One Night' in 2004. The movie took part in numerous international film festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Earlier reports said Leila Hatami was also cast to play one of the main roles in Qeidi’s film.
