Amiens festival awards Iranian doc ‘Asho’

Iranian doc ‘Asho’ grabs Grand Prize at the 2020 Amiens Int’l Film Festival in France.

Iranian documentary ‘Asho’ has garnered the Grand Prize at the 40th edition of the Amiens International Film Festival (AIFF) in France.

Directed by Jafar Najafi, the 30-minute documentary narrates the story of a boy, Asho, who shepherds a flock of sheep.

Asho’s biggest dream is to become a Hollywood star. He is under the influence of the Hollywood films that his cousin brought him.

The doc has so far received many awards, including special mention at the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film - DOK Leipzig in Germany, Lessina Silver for Best Short Film at the Film Festival Della Lessinia in Italy, and International Short Film Jury award at the DOQUMENTA International Documentary Film Festival in Mexico.

Best International Short Film Award at the Fribourg International Film Festival in Germany and Best Short Film award at the Sevastopol International Festival of Documentary Films and TV Programs “Won Together” in Russia are also among the honors achieved by ‘Asho’.

“It is a particular film, with the appearance of a pastoral chronicle but which behind this vision hides the in-depth description of Iranian society, in all its component. This allows us to follow a mischievous and cinephile child, whom Truffaut would not have denied,” reads the AIFF jury’s comment on the short.

Lineups of nine feature films, seven documentaries, and 13 short films competed for the awards at the 40th edition of the AIFF.

The festival aims to showcase films that focus on the expression of people’s identity and promoting the understanding of cultures.

The 2020 edition of the event was held on November 13-21.
