Blessing or Barekat in Iranian culture

As a profound Islamic concept, Barekat or blessing is defined as a beneficent force from God flowing through the physical and spiritual world as prosperity, protection and happiness.

There is a common Iranian proverb that says, ‘begin to weave and God will send you the thread,” or simply put, you should take action and God will grant you the blessing. The fact that God helps us with earning our livelihood does not mean that we should stop working.

The notion of Barekat is a theme now and then spoken by characters in Iranian movies and series. Characters in Iranian movies and series may repeat a famous proverb which literally means you should take action and God will grant you the blessing. It implies that God is the one that facilitate our livelihood but at the same time we are the ones who should do our best and never stop trying.

The characters my also speak of endless Barekat. They believe when something enjoys God’s special blessings, it can last long.

In Iranian culture, we are frequently advised to work hard for a decent living that indeed brings blessing into our lives.

Barekat or blessing is not necessarily a greater amount of money earned; rather, it indicates a higher quality of life.

It is said that a person whose life is blessed is like someone who is satisfied and gets filled up with the smallest amount of food. That satisfaction and happiness is in fact not because of the wealth; rather, because of the blessing or Barekat which God has granted him.
