Chamush: Traditional, authentic footwear of Gilan Province

Chamush is the traditional and authentic footwear that has long been made from natural leather in some northern regions of Iran, particularly in the province of Gilan.

Chamush is traditionally worn by herdsmen and farmers of the province. The most prominent center where Chamush is made is in the village of Masouleh of Foumanat County that is known for its beautiful and unique architecture.

One of the features of Chamush is that they keep the feet cool in the warm seasons and warm, when it is cold.

Making a pair of Chamush takes from one to three weeks. Chamush for women differ in their embroidery and pattern designs from those for men. It is also usual for men’s to be made from buff leather, and women’s from goat leather.

The footwear is found mostly in Carmine red, and is made only by hand stitching.

The Chamush-making craft is passed from one generation to the next to help raise the income of the family.

Today, the footwear only has a decorative function. Miniature sized Chamushes are made in Gilan as souvenirs and display items.
