Lake Urmia, a blue gem in northwestern Iran, is the largest salt lake in the Middle East. The Lake is a protected region and Iran is making a great effort to preserve it and increase its wildlife.

The lake covers an area of 2000 to 2300 square miles. The lake is known for its extreme salinity and its shores are largely uninhabited.

As preserving the lake is of high importance to Iran’s government the fifteenth of Esfand (March 5) is set as the national day of Lake Urmia.
