Get to know composer for ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’

Oscar-winning Indian Muslim AR Rahman has created music for Majid Majidi’s ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’.

Oscar-winning Indian Muslim AR Rahman has created music for Majid Majidi’s ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’.

In 2009, Rahman bagged Academy Award for the original score for 'Slumdog Millionaire' before joining Majidi’s biopic on the Prophet of Islam. According to a media report, he is the only musician from India to win an Oscar.

Born as Dileep Kumar in 1967 in India, AR Rahman embraced Islam, along with his family, after his father RK Shekhar’s demise, who was also a music composer.

In an interview with Indian media, AR Rahman said that he doesn’t believe in imposing his religious beliefs on others.

“You can’t impose anything. You can’t ask your son or daughter to not take history ‘coz it’s boring, and to take economics instead, or science. It’s a personal choice,” he said.

He also noted that, “It’s not about converting to Islam, it’s about finding the spot and seeing whether it presses the button in you.”

Talking about the importance of prayers in his life, he added, “Prayer has been extremely beneficial. It has saved me from many falls. In between prayers, I think, ‘Oh, I have to pray, so I can’t do this mischief’. People from other faiths do the same thing and are peaceful too. For me, this works!”

He composed the music for ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’ recently aired by ifilm. His religious background is in tune with the theme of this film as it depicts the life story of the prophet.

The movie portrays the life of Islam’s Holy Prophet and narrates the early years of his prophecy in Mecca. This is the first part of a trilogy which seems to cover the whole life of the Prophet.

'Muhammad: The Messenger of God’ initially sets in a time when Muslims were boycotted in an area called “She’eb Abi Talib”.  From the very beginning, the film gives the audience a flashback to events surrounding the prophet’s pre-birth and adolescence.
