Australian ambassador celebrates Iran’s Chaharshanbe Suri

Australia’s ambassador to Iran celebrates the ancient Festival of Fire, also known as Chaharshanbeh-Souri in Persian.

A video showing the Australian ambassador Lyndall Sachs jumping over bonfires was released on Tuesday.

Jumping over the fire at sunset, which is aimed at bidding evil adieu and welcoming hope and joy, is one of the traditions of the ancient fire festival known as “Chaharshanbe Suri”.

The festival is marked on the last Tuesday night of the outgoing Persian year.

The festival preludes the Persian New Year, Nowruz, which falls on March 21 this year.
