Minneapolis filmfest to screen Iranian ‘TiTi’

Iranian movie ‘TiTi’ is to compete at the Minneapolis St. Paul Int’l Film Festival in the US.

Iranian movie ‘TiTi’ has been set to compete at the 40th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) in the US.

Directed by Ida Panahandeh in 2020, the 102-minute movie is a cinematic magical realism meeting hard-edged drama in a stunning look at the life of Titi, an Iranian Roma Gypsy who earns pennies cleaning hospitals, becomes a surrogate mother… and saves the world from a rogue black hole.

Working in a hospital, Titi encounters Ibrahim, a nuclear physicist suffering from a terminal illness. Taking a liking to Titi, he explains his work to her, and she believes that it is essential to the future of the planet.

When he slips into a coma, his wife demands his papers are discarded, but Titi takes them home, where her husband lines his rabbit cages with them.

Set to open the 10th Iranian Film Festival in Australia, ‘TiTi’ has so far gone on screen at the Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan and the Fajr Film Festival in Iran.

The cast list of the movie includes Parsa Pirouzfar, Elnaz Shakerdoust, Houtan Shakiba, Soudabeh Jafarzadeh, Hanieh Kazemi, Mehdi Farizeh, Zeinab Shabani, Manouchehr Amiri, and Mahyar Daneshmand.

Born in Tehran in 1979, Panahandeh earned a degree in Film Photography in 2002 and a master’s in Film Direction in 2005 from the Arts University of Tehran. She is the director of the features ‘The Story of Davood and the Dove’ (2011), ‘Nahid’ (2015), ‘Israfil’ (2017), and ‘The Nikaidos' Fall’ (2019).

The new, hybrid format of the MSPIFF will combine virtual events with an array of outdoor screenings in both Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The Mission of MSPIFF is to foster a knowledgeable and vibrant appreciation of the art of film and its power to inform and transform individuals and communities.

The 40th edition of the MSPIFF is slated for May 13-23, 2021.
