The statue portrays a father carrying his two martyred children representing the Iranian Kurdish people’s resistance during the 1980-1988 Iraqi Ba'ath regime chemical attack on people of Sardasht, West Azerbaijan that left more than 1000 martyrs.
In June 1987 during the Iraq imposed war on Iran, the Iranian town of Sardasht and the surrounding regions were hit by chemical weapons dropped by the Iraqi warplanes.
The attack led to the killing of over 1000 while over 8000 civilians were injured, many of whom were permanently disabled.
According to a study, about 6,000 Iranians were killed during several violent attacks with chemical weapons by Iraq during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war; and today, there are still survivors of these attacks suffering from the aftereffects.
