Beating sounds played by percussion instrument Naqqareh and the reverberation of wind instrument Karna at Imam Reza’s (AS) holy shrine serve as the harbingers of the Islamic mourning month of Muharram.
The Monday ritual of playing Naqqareh and Karna at Imam Reza’s (AS) holy shrine marks the beginning of the Islamic mourning month of Muharram in which the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS), and his 72 faithful companions were martyred at the Battle of Karbala.
Such ritual will be halted at the shrine during the Islamic months of Muharram and Safar and in commemoration of Imam Hussein's (AS) martyrdom anniversary.
The Naqqareh Khaneh building in the holy shrine is located in the Naqqareh Arch, which the Naqareh is played above the arch at various religious and national occasions.
Imam Reza's (AS) shrine is the most prominent religious site in Mashhad where millions of pilgrims per year visit there.
