Three Iranian villages nominated for UNWTO label

Iranian villages of Kharanaq, Barandaq, and Lark have been nominated for the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ label to be granted by the World Tourism Organization.

Three Iranian villages of Kharanaq, Barandaq, and Lark have been nominated for the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ label, which is granted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The label is granted by the UNWTO to a selection of rural destinations across the globe, which meets the eligibility criteria declared by the UN Body.

Situated in Ardakan county of Yazd Province in central Iran, the village of Kharanaq is known as a photographer’s dream as it embraces a labyrinth of streets, tunnels, passageways, and magnificent buildings such as a tiny mosque and an old caravanserai.

The village of Barandaq in the northwestern Ardabil Province enjoys lush natural beauties, historical places, and hospitable people. It is famous for its freezing winters and mild summers.

Located on a small island of the same name in the Persian Gulf, the village of Larak is home to various species of corals that are unique in their own kind.

The World Tourism Organization aims to “turn the spotlight on the uniqueness of each village to make tourism a means for further development in rural areas.”

Part of the objectives seeking by the WTO is also “to select the best examples of rural villages, to harness the power of tourism and to provide opportunities and safeguard their communities, local traditions, and heritage,” according the official website of the organization.
