Get to know Great Wall of Gorgan in Iran

Let’s learn about Iran’s Great Wall of Gorgan famous as “red snake”.

Here is a brief review of the history of the Great Wall of Gorgan in Iran’s northern province of Golestan.

When the Sassanid dynasty reigned the country, the Persian Empire got to deal with a series of wars, which mostly took place at the northern borders where the Great Wall of Gorgan was constructed for defensive purposes.

The wall stretched over 200 kilometers from the Alborz ranges to the Caspian Sea and consisted of 38 forts, which made it the longest fort-lined ancient defensive wall in the world after the Great Wall of China.

Some historical evidences show that the Iranian wall was built at least a thousand years prior to the Chinese wall.

The red bricks used in the wall have brought it the famous title of “red snake”.

The Great Wall of Gorgan is now a national heritage and a UNESCO-recorded world heritage.
