Sofia MENAR to show ‘When Pomegranates Howl’

The Sofia MENAR in Bulgaria is to screen ‘When Pomegranates Howl’.

The 14th Sofia Middle East and North Africa Region Film Festival in Bulgaria is set to screen ‘When Pomegranates Howl’, a co-production from Iran, Afghanistan, the Netherlands, and Australia.

Directed by Iranian filmmaker Granaz Mousavi, the drama tells the story of a little boy named Hewad, who lives on the streets of Kabul following the loss of his father and brother.

The 9-year-old boy starts working as a cart pusher to support his family. He enjoys doing his job, traveling through the capital city of Afghanistan.

He actually has a dream to become a star of cinema. His dream revives as he meets an Australian photographer.

Arafat Faiz, Elham Ayazi, Saeedeh Sadat, Fereshteh Alami, Madineh Niaz and Andrew Quilty are some of the cast members of the flick.

Iranian maestro, Hossein Alizadeh, has composed the music score for the movie.

Atabai’ by Niki Karimi and ‘No Choice’ by Reza Dormishian are the other representatives of Iran at the 14th Sofia MENAR.

The Sofia MENAR presents the best of the Middle East and North Africa film productions, including feature films, documentaries and short projects.

According to the official website of the event, the term MENAR (the Middle East and North Africa Region) is “an acronym often used to cover an extensive area, stretching from Morocco to Iran, including the majority of both the Middle Eastern and Maghreb countries.”

The upcoming edition of the event is slated for January 14-30, 2022.
