Mega-animations ‘Cars 3’, ‘Despicable Me 3’ to vie in US

Two highly-anticipated American animations, ‘Cars 3’ and ‘Despicable Me 3’, are set to be released this weekend.

The two box-office franchises are expected to reel in a lot of viewers as well as cash for American film companies Universal and Disney/Pixar this weekend.

Pixar’s ‘Cars 3’ and Illumination Entertainment’s ‘Despicable 3’ open tomorrow and June 30, respectively.

The current box-office champion, ‘Wonder Woman’, will no longer bear the burden of saving the box office — after two weekends on top.

Experts are weighting in on which animation will take top reign and push its respective distribution company ahead of the pack this year.

If ‘Despicable Me 3’ draws the biggest crowd, Universal could become the most successful animation distributor in domestic box office.

Disney still holds sway on a global arena, however. Over the last five years, Disney has grossed just over $5 billion to Universal’s $3.35 billion.

To make things more interesting, as a producer Illumination’s box office is bigger than either Disney or Pixar, domestic and foreign. With the release of the two animations this weekend, Illumination could become more successful than both entities combined at the domestic box office.

‘Cars’ franchise is a CGI-animated film series set in a world populated by anthropomorphic vehicles. The first film was released in 2006, with a sequel in 2011.

‘Despicable Me’ is a computer-animated comedy film franchise produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures. The plot of the films centers on Gru, a super-villain (who later becomes a dad and superhero), and his yellow-colored Minions.
