What is Haftsin Table in Persian New Year culture?

Nowruz is one of the most important events in the Persian Calendar.

Nowruz is one of the most important events in the Persian Calendar.

Marked as the beginning of the year, Nowruz holidays provide a chance to refresh, recover and meet friends and family.

The most important element of Nowruz is Haftsin or Seven ‘S’ Table consisting of seven invaluable items any of which has a rich meaning in Persian culture.

Each item in Haftsin table symbolizes a concept in Persian culture. Sabzeh (sprouts) is a symbol of rebirth and renewal of nature. Samanu represents fertility and the sweetness of life. Senjed (Russian olive) is for love and affection. Serkeh (Vinegar) symbolizes patience and age. Seeb (Apple) is a symbol of health and beauty. Seer (Garlic) is for good health and Somaq (Sumac) symbolizes the sunrise and the spice of life.

Also some people add Sekkeh (coins) to the table as one of the items as a symbol of blessing and income.

Today Iranians set the table adding other items on the table including candles symbolizing light and heat, eggs that are symbol of birth and ethnicity, mirror as a symbol of brightness and purity and the Holy Quran to remember God at the most important moment of the year.

In ancient Iranian culture, seven is a holy number which represents life and immortality.
