Historic mosque in heart of Tehran Grand Bazaar

Bazaar Jameh Mosque is the oldest building hidden among the shopping streets of Tehran Grand Bazaar.

Bazaar Jameh Mosque is the oldest building hidden among the shopping streets of Tehran Grand Bazaar.

Located inside corridors of Tehran's Grand Bazar, the Jameh Mosque with its oldest Shabestan, known as the Atiq Mosque, is believed to be built over 1,000 years ago.

Tehran Bazaar Jameh Mosque includes seven shabestans (an underground space that can be usually found in traditional architecture of mosques), built in different eras.

The architectural design of any shabestan is different from Bazaar Jameh Mosque; for example, Ayatollah Shahabadi Mosque with its ancient wind catchers is located in the vicinity of western door of Bazaar Jameh Mosque. The wind catchers are the reason why the shabestan is named Masjid Bahareh (Spring Mosque).

There is another shabestan called Chehelsotoon (40 columns) while in fact it has only 36 columns.

There is a unique library of manuscripts and precious Quran, which have been purchased from around the world and donated to the Chehelsotoon Mosque.
