During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset. The act of fasting is aimed to remind people of the plight of the impoverished people.

In the hours preceding iftar, people in Iran usually rush to shop for the meal and buy fresh bread and desserts.

People also queue to buy thick soups such as Haleem and Ash Reshteh.

During Ramadan, people also make more charitable donations and spend more time reading the Quran, and praying.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is the month when the first verses of the Holy Quran were revealed to Islam’s Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
