Iran’s Saholan water cave; vibrant tourist attraction

Iranian Province of West Azarbaijan is home to the country’s second largest water cave.

Iranian Province of West Azarbaijan is home to the country’s second largest water cave named Saholan.

Saholan Cave is located in Saholan village, 42 kilometers southeast of Mahabad city on the road that connects Mahabad and Bukan cities in West Azarbaijan Province.

Saholan means ice in Kurdish language and the cave perhaps owes its name to its geological features. Besides, the local people call the cave Kune Kotar which means pigeon's nest. The reason for the naming by the locals is the presence of many pigeon nests inside the cave.

The Saholan water cave, listed among the national natural monuments of Iran, is one of the most important tourist attractions in West Azarbaijan Province. It receives a large number of travelers and tourists every year. This beautiful cave has an important role in development of tourism in the province.
