The location of Tabriz City on the Silk Road was the reason for the bazaar to be used by thousands of caravans from different countries in the old days and in the present time, the place is still known as the main trading center of the people of Tabriz and Iran.

A major earthquake in the city of Tabriz resulted in the destruction of the whole city and its market; however, the market was rebuilt by Najafqoli Khan Danbali, the then ruler of Tabriz.

This bazaar is a massive complex with about 5,500 rooms, shops and stores, 35 houses, 30 mosques, 20 streets and markets, 11 hallways, 5 bathrooms and 12 schools.

The Tabriz Grand Bazaar with an area of about one square kilometer was registered as the world's largest covered market in the UNESCO world heritage list in August 2010.
