US star Will Smith cast to play Genie in 'Aladdin'

US actor Will Smith has joined the cast of ‘Aladdin’, playing the Genie in the live-action remake.

US film studio Disney said among the announcements made at Disney's D23 Expo, the Hollywood star will take over the role from Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film.

The original production was a highest grossing film and won two Academy Awards.

‘Aladdin’ is one of several live-action remakes currently planned by Disney. A media report said it will begin shooting in August in London; however, a release date on the remake is yet to be announced.

Guy Ritchie is set to helm the film, giving the Disney classic an update.

Official Disney Fan Club’s D23 Expo is currently underway in California.
