As part of mourning rituals for Imam Hussein (AS), Iran’s Birjand has seen a symbolic convoy roaming the streets of the city.

On Thursday, the symbolic convoy roamed Birjand to commemorate the anniversary of the arrival of Imam Hussein (AS) in the desert of Karbala.

The event is observed every year on the second day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, which falls on Thursday this year.

The symbolic convoy, in which 200 people played different roles, is aimed to announce the start of the month of Muharram when Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred.

Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred along with 72 of his companions in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq,  on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, some 14 centuries ago after fighting courageously for justice against thousands of soldiers of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.

Each year, Shia Muslims commemorate Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), dressed in black and taking part in mourning rituals.

Ashura is the climax of 10-day mourning ceremonies that are observed in Muharram. The ceremonies symbolize the humanity’s struggle against tyranny and oppression.
