Bideh Village residents stage Passion Play on Ashura

Bideh Village in Yazd Province takes center stage with symbolic performance of Ta’zieh.

Bideh Village in Iran's Yazd Province has taken center stage with the symbolic performance of Ta’zieh on the occasion of the day of Ashura.

Each year, the historical village becomes the arena for the devout Muslims to commemorate the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hossein (AS) - the grandson of Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] - by performing Ta’zieh or Passion Play.

As it is customary in the region, the ceremonial performance was staged in presence of innumerable spectators on the midday of Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram.

What distinguishes this Islamic theatrical performance from the rest of the plays is that its audiences know the story perfectly well and basically watch it every year on the same occasion. Yet, each time they shed emotional tears for the innocence of Imam Hossein (AS) and his faithful companions.

Here are some photos depicting this year’s performance of Tazi’eh in Yazd’s Bideh Village:
