The village owes its name to its geographical features of being built on the lagoon. The name Abkenar is comprised of two parts of "Ab" (meaning water) and "Kenar" (meaning next to); which means it is next to a body of water.
The lagoon itself is a very famous and widely visited site in the Iranian province of Gilan. The travelers visit there for the peace and tranquility this bewitching gem of nature offers.
Yet, tourists can also enjoy a good tour of local markets for local fresh products. The visitors should definitely spend a day at the village for its local markets. If they arrive on a Thursday, they can grab great bargains at the local Thursday Market.
The wooden bridge and the water lilies on the lagoon give the visitors an amazing chance for nature photoshoots.
