Since the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted in China, the summer months of June to August have witnessed the highest revenues in the Chinese movie theaters with some 435 million tickets being sold.
The top three hits, locally-produced films in various genres, are as follows:
1. ‘Lost in the Stars’, a mystery drama co-directed by Rui Cui and Liu Xiang
2. ‘No More Bets’, a crime-action movie directed by Ao Shen
3. Wuershan’s historical fantasy ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms’
The rest of top raked titles in the 2023 Chinese box office include Guo Hu’s drama ‘One and Only’, Junwei Xie and Jing Zou’s animation ‘Chang An’, and Wang Baoqiang’s martial arts drama ‘Never Say Never’.
Ben Wheatley’s ‘Meg 2: The Trench’, a locally produced English-language action adventure, has been among the top works of this summer.
While the local movies dominated the theater halls of the country, during the same time span, the two Hollywood movies that could have modest revenues in China were ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ with $97 million and ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1’ with $51 million sales.
