Iranians embrace tradition on longest night: iFilm cut

As Thursday, December 21, 2023 approaches, Iranians are gearing up for the cultural winter feast known as Yalda Night, marking the longest night of the year.

In a video featuring the late veteran Iranian actress Parvaneh Masoumi, a scene cut from 'Khatoun, the Mother' captures her explaining the significance of Yalda.

Yalda, synonymous with the triumph of light over darkness, is celebrated on the last day of the Persian calendar month of Azar, falling on December 21 this year.

Rooted in ancient traditions, Iranians view this night as a symbolic transition from autumn to winter.

The heart of Yalda celebrations lies in familial gatherings, where generations come together, often hosted by elders, to socialize and indulge in the feast's special delicacies.

Watermelons and pomegranates, believed to ward off illnesses in the cold season, take center stage, accompanied by a variety of nuts. The night is also marked by the recitation of verses from Hafez, the renowned Persian poet. 

"Yalda Night or Shab-e-Chella", practiced in Iran and Afghanistan, was registered on the global list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

As Iranians join in the festivities, the Yalda Night video featuring Parvaneh Masoumi adds a touch to the cultural celebration, emphasizing the enduring traditions that connect generations.
