Doc on historical Iranian figure to premiere online

New Iranian documentary 'Jamal al-Din' is set to make its online debut.

The documentary's online screening begins on September 2, coinciding with Iran's National Day of Fight Against British Colonialism.

Produced by Iran's Soureh Documentary Center, the doc offers a deep dive into the life and legacy of Seyyed Jamal al-Din Asadabadi, a prominent Iranian intellectual and political activist.

Directed by Amir Rouini and Ali Kousha, 'Jamal al-Din' offers a comprehensive look at Asadabadi's significant contributions, particularly his role in the Iranian Tobacco protest in the 1890s.

The Iranian Tobacco protest was a nationwide movement that erupted in opposition to the British control of Iran's tobacco trade, which had been conceded by Naser al-Din Shah Qajar.

The documentary incorporated archival footage to vividly portray this historical figure.

It has already garnered attention in documentary festivals, winning nominations for the Best Documentary Script and the Best Narrator at the 17th International Documentary Film Festival of Iran, known as "Cinema Verite." 

'Jamal al-Din' was developed as part of the "Cinema Epic" initiative in Iran, which aims to produce documentaries about iconic Iranian figures.

The documentary production team spent nearly five months researching and writing the script, followed by another two months finding archival materials about the historical figure. 

Iran annually commemorates the National Day of Fight Against British Colonialism, honoring the memory of Rais Ali Delvari on his martyrdom anniversary.

Delvari is revered as a great national hero and independence fighter who led the anti-colonial struggles in southern Iran.
