But what began as a moment of sporting glory quickly became a cultural flashpoint.

Khan Baba, a respected elder, used the occasion to remind spectators of ancestral customs:

“Our way is that the girl serves her cousin. Yet today, her cousin stands in service to Maral.”

Rather than accept the decree, Maral rode off in visible fury.
