Construction of the first Iranian university in Iraq has commenced in the country’s capital city of Baghdad.

The construction of the Iranian university named ‘al-Mustafa al-Amin’ was launched during a ceremony in Kadhimayn, north of Baghdad, on Monday.

The monumental endeavor is part of efforts to boost academic relations between the Persian and Arab neighbors.

The university will house faculties offering majors in experimental sciences, humanities and Islamic sciences, said Abdollah Hassani, head of the university’s board of trustees and vice chancellor for administrative and financial affairs.

The first stage of the project will include the faculties of literature, jurisprudence and law.

Several high-ranking Iranian and Iraqi officials attended the ceremony, including Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi and Iraq’s deputy minister of higher education and scientific research.

The university is expected to admit 3,000 students, with grounds covering an area of 22,500 square meters, Hassani concluded.
