George Clooney compares Houston to Syria

Film star calls Americans left homeless by hurricanes ‘akin to Syrians’

American movie star George Clooney describes the Americans left homeless by hurricanes, as akin to Syrians.

Using the analogy, Clooney noted that reconstruction would take a long time, because ‘Houston is Syria, quite honestly’.

Addressing journalists on the sidelines of the Toronto International Film Festival on ‘Suburbicon’, the most recent feature he has directed, the renowned star’s topic shifted to politics when he referred to the American people who have fallen victims to hurricanes as refugees.

Drawing resemblance among Americans and Syrians, he stressed that although those Americans didn't do anything, they are now victims.

Hurricane Irma was still wreaking havoc in South Carolina late Monday after causing at least 10 deaths in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have caused between $150 billion and $200 billion in damage to Texas and Florida.

This is while Syria's six-year war has killed over 320,000 people and displaced more than half the country's population since it began in March 2011, and also ravaged the nation’s infrastructure and caused losses to its economy of $226 billion.
