Tehran hosts UNESCO’s Peace Day ceremony in Azadi Tower

UNESCO celebrates the International Day of Peace at Azadi Tower in Tehran.

UNESCO has celebrated the International Day of Peace during a ceremony at Azadi Tower in Tehran.

Screening some video images related to the theme of peace, the ceremony was held on September 20 during a public event at the Iranian capital.

The event consisted of a series of short artistic performances, including poetry, music, film and theater.

The director and representative of UNESCO’s Tehran office, Esther Kuisch Laroche, delivered a speech at the event, saying, “Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences, and to contribute to building a culture of peace, which is at the heart of UNESCO’s mission.”

Highlighting the role of education, sciences, culture and arts as essential tools to bring people closer together and build a culture of peace, she said music and arts have a unique way of excelling limits and connecting people.

Directed by Amir-Reza Salari, the video mapping performance called ‘Thirty Birds of Peace’ is based on Persian literature and history.

The light symphony was on the issue of peace and used symbolic images of the world art about freedom from before the birth of Christ to the contemporary era.

Built in 1971, Azadi Tower is a Tehran landmark linking modern Islamic architecture and the Sassanid style. There are several fountains around the tower’s base and a museum under the 3D monument.

The International Day of Peace (Peace Day) is annually observed around the world on September 21.

Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a culture of peace.

The theme for this year’s Peace Day is ‘Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All’.
