Tehran gallery opens exhibition of Muharram rituals photo

Tehran gallery showcases a collection of historical photos from Muharram rituals.

Laleh Gallery and the City Photo Museum in Tehran have showcased a collection of historical photos from the mourning rituals in the month of Muharram.

Titled “Mourners: the Historical Photos of the Muharram Mourning”, the event was opened on September 25, 2017.

It showcases 55 images simultaneously in the two venues.

The featured photos are mostly from religious mourning ceremonies, dating back to the Qajar Dynasty (1789–1925).

The month of Muharram is the time of national mourning and paying tribute to Imam Hussein (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims, and his 72 companions in the Karbala tragedy.

The Imam’s martyrdom anniversary is being held annually on the tenth day of Muharram.

Muharram mourning ceremonies have long been intertwined with Persian culture and are often also manifested through different field of arts, including film, photos, plays, and paintings.

The exhibition will come to an end on October 31, 2017.
