Trump reelection end of democracy: US Actor

American actor Jeff Daniels shared his thoughts on US President Donald Trump in an interview, calling his reelection "the end of democracy."

In an interview with US television network MSNBC, Daniels talked about his role as Atticus Finch in the Broadway show ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and its relation to the current political climate in the US.

In part of his talk, Daniel implied Trump’s reelection would mean “the end of democracy” as we know it.

“We’re gonna find out, you know, if the big gamble is to go all the way to November 2020, which I agree, and lose. It’s the end of democracy,” he said.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ is a Broadway production on the issue of racial injustice in the 1930s Alabama based on Harper Lee’s novel.

Atticus Finch, the main character whose role was played by Daniels, was a lawyer known for his racial heroism.

Daniels who resides in Michigan, said that when it comes to voting, a portion of the state’s population is apathetic, questioning the presence of active voters and whether Atticus Finch’s views of compassion and inherent decency are shared.

The actor also compared the theme of racial injustice in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ to the Republican Party agenda of today.

“It’s race. This is about the Republican party or a wing of it going, ‘This is our last chance to save the party and if we don’t, it’s the end of the Republican party.’ The only way they can do that was to tap the race button and say, ‘Go ahead, it’s okay,'” Daniels said.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ has received nine nominations for the 2019 Tony Awards in June, including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Jeff Daniels’ performance.
