Veteran Iranian comedian Akbar Abdi passes away

Veteran Iranian comedian Akbar Abdi passed away at the age of 66.

The veteran actor died on July 24, 2026 at his home in Tehran after being discharged from hospital.

Born in 1960 in Tehran, Abdi finished high school in 1980 and began acting in amateur plays.

He shot to fame by appearing in TV series ‘Boro Bia Neighborhood’ (1982) and ‘I’m Late for school Again’ (1986).

The actor has appeared in more than 120 movies and series.

The most notable among the movies he acted in are ‘Dolls Thief’, ‘Snowman’, ‘Operation Kindergarten’, ‘The Devoted’, ‘The Stranger’, ‘The Rule of the Game’, ‘The Tenants’, ‘The Magical Journey’, ‘The Backstreets of Shemroon’, ‘Mother’, ‘Misunderstanding’, ‘The Wrong Story’, ‘A Gift from India’, and ‘The Dowry's Sugar Bowl’.

Abdi has also acted in a large number of series, including ‘Era of Constitutional Revolution’, ‘Imam Ali (AS)’, ‘In the Eye of the Storm’, ‘Jaber ibn Hayyan’, ‘Relatively Bad Guys’, and ‘Innocence Lost’.

Abdi’s flexibility allowed him to take on diverse roles such as the role of a child and middle-aged man in ‘The Magical Journey’ and a mentality-disabled boy in ‘Mother’, as well as playing roles of a man and a woman in ‘Snowman’.

He has won numerous awards, notably for his appearance in ‘Mother’ and ‘I’m Sleepy’ which brought him the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Fajr International Film Festival.
